Larry Csonka
Larry Csonka was born on December 25th 1946 as one of six Children in Stow, Ohio. He grew up on his Hungarian Parents farm in Stow, where he learned to endure injuries and pain. Csonka always was heavy from birth on. At age 16 he weight already 237 pounds, in the years 1962/1963 even more extraordinary than nowadays.
Larry Csonka's High School Career
His Football Career began at Stow-Munroe Falls HS. With him as their starting Tailback in his senior year (1963) they won the Metropolian League of the Akron area championship with Coach Dick Fortner at the helm. With his size and weight he got to the runningback job by accident (or sheer luck): his first two years he served as a defensive end, a much more logical position for his size. But then on the last season game of his sophomore year he was send in as a substitute on the KO team. Somehow the ball got to him and he started running...
Larry Csonka remembers:
"I ran over two tacklers before I realized what I was doing. I didn't score or save the game, but I got a tremendous feeling carrying the ball. I was thrashing around, trying to run six ways at once. I loved it. I knew then that I wanted to run with the ball."
It was still a long way to convice his teammates and even more his coaches during the ensuing offseason that he wanted and could play running back. But they gave him a chance in the first game his junior season, and from then on nobody questioned him anymore.
Larry Csonka's College Career
Heavily recruited by Clemson, Iowa, Vanderbilt, and Syracuse. Finally he settled for Syracuse where he played fullback from 1965 thru 1967 where he also earned the honors of being named All-American. In his three years at Syracuse he broke many of the school's rushing records some of the held by so famous rushers as Ernie Davis, Jim Nance, Floyd Little, and Jim Brown.
He also earned MVP honors in the East-West shrine Game, the Hula Bowl and the College All-Star Game.
