Reply Paul McMillan says: April 16, 1999 at 8:51 am I am involved in youth ftbl. 8-10 yr old right now. Trying to develope an effective, but simple system for my kids. Like the power-I, but looking at the wing-T. My problem with it is the need for pulling linemen. Always have a problem finding little guys that can pull and block effectively. I found one kid that could pull and block so I always pulled him from the off guard side. Worked for us little guys. Last year I ran the wing-T some. The Strong side would be called 2 or 1, with 2 on the right and 1 on the left. Right sweep was called 2-sweep and left was called 1-sweep, with the 2-back carrying. Then 2-dive and 1-dive, with the 3-back carrying. Then 2-back or 1-back, which means the wing back came back with the ball to opposite end or 2-back sweep. Then I had the 2-cross sweep, with the FB going to the off-guard hole. So it would be 2-cross sweep, 1-cross sweep, 2-cross dive, 1-cross dive,2-cross back, 1-cross back. The QB would always go the oppposite of the play unless it was a keeper to the same direction of the tailback, 2-sweep keeper. Then I would do a simple version of your waggle pass. I would also run all of above from a slot and an out, meaning the wing back would slot to the split end side or split out about 8 yds from the TE. I also put in a reverse, called 2 or 1 sweep reverse, with the HB handing off to the wing back, coming back. I didn’t put it in ’til half way in the season and the kids liked it because they didn’t have to remember the numbering system. what do you think? would like any suggestions. thanks again and enjoy your site. This is my first year with youth football ages 10-11 and I really didn’t know where to start in regards to drills. Anyone can make up a playbook and run plays. The difficult part is comming up with fundamental drills to teach your players to help improve their skills. It’s also a way to help coaches establish a practice schedule and to use their limited time efficiently. Other subjects I would like to see covered are techniques for proper taping and wrapping of minor injuries. If anyone has any information on this subject please forward to email@example.com. Reply John Styron says: May 4, 2002 at 4:40 am No compliment could be good enough for this site! Sincere deepest heart felt condolences for your loss. I’ve assisted with coaching 7-8 yr olds the past two seasons. Good possibility that I will be elected as head coach for this age group this coming season. My true interest evolved through my oldest son being a member of the team. Unfortunately I know little about football except for what I have learned from your site and the coaching. I have reviewed most of your drills and I believe I can use some of the more basic drills. The biggest factor resulting in a winless season this past year is that the team failed to tackle correctly from the waist on down. Our practice sessions did consist of a combination of one on one drills and running plays in an attempt to teach the boys tackling. Totally different story come game time. 99% of attemted tackles were from the waist on up and one arm attempts. At this age the boys still have a short attention span and they lack some basic discipline. I’ve been in the military for almost the last 24 years. My first year as assistant coach was very frustrating because parents are watching, and me being sensitive to this I attempted not to come across to the boys like a drill sergeant. I know most important first is to show the boys they can have fun playing the game. But I also want to win some games!!! The season is fast approaching. I need help!!! Can you give me some advice on establishing discipline, confidence and tackling drills that would be effective for this age group. Also at this level these boys are mostly playing a running game. How can I use 1 1/2 hours three times a week efficiently and teach these boys a good running game and a stop dead defense? I’m expecting a team of between 18-23 boys with no more than 50% returning from last year. Sincerely, John Reply Stefan says: May 4, 2002 at 10:25 am eine sehr gute Seite Reply Ben White says: May 6, 2002 at 8:19 pm Coach, I was just looking up some football web sites and I saw yours. It is very good. It was also interesting to see that you were a player and coach in Germany. I also played and coached there. In 1991, I was the first American that the Hamburg Silver Eagles brought over to play. I remember playing the Cologne Crocodiles. We lost, but I intercepted a Michael Davis pass. Then I came back and played and coached for the Hamburg Blue Devils in 1996. My father, George White was the head coach. I also played and coached for a small team in Bavaria in 1997 and 98. I’ve been a head high school coach in San Francisco for 8 years. I’d be interested in helping you get information for your site if you’d like. Reply Jerry CAmpbell says: November 3, 2002 at 5:03 am Great instructional site Reply Thomas Ashcraft says: November 17, 2002 at 3:17 pm My son is a Sophmore in high school and has placed kicked, kicked off and punted his Freshman and Sophmore years. Due to a shoulder injury his duties this year was limited to just extra points and field goals. Min. kick off duty. Last year and first part of this year he could hit field goals with consistency from the 35 to 40 yard line not counting the 10 yard end zone. Towards the end of the season it seemed to me that he began to lose some leg strenght and his kick offs and field goals began to look lifeless. His extra points remained good. We are looking for strenght drills, kickoff drills and guide to weather he should be 5 yards deep or 10 yards deep. His punting would average 40 yards but due to shoulder injury and the fact that the snapper wasn’t that good, coaches elected not to put him in for punting for fear of another injury. Surgery has corrected the shoulder within the last week and we expect him to be full speed by next august. So we also need punting guidelines and strenght condition for this also. Please advise and help Reply Coach Robert A. Haupt says: November 27, 2002 at 8:52 pm Very nice website. New Mexico Reply Don Nicholson says: February 6, 2004 at 9:23 pm Thanks for organizing and sharing so much information. Sometimes football coaches tend to be secretive about their drills and teaching techniques, but that really isn’t helping new coaches develop or improving our sport. Great to have your help. I’ve coached at most levels over the last 25 years. Now I’m coaching at the high school senior (varsity) level. We play Canadian rules with the following exceptions: we play four downs, not three downs; and we use the american neutral zone, not one yard. As you can imagine, most of our coaching technique is geared towards the Canadian one yard neutral zone, which changes considerably when that yard is removed. Our offensive and defensive line techniques have to be adjusted to account for the neutral zone change, so your information is very helpful in making these adjustments. Keep up the good work!!
