QB Read Progression Drill

Mastering the Read: The “QB Read Progression Drill” for Efficient Dropbacks and Sharper Decision-Making

The “QB Read Progression Drill” is a cornerstone for developing a quarterback’s ability to execute smooth dropbacks while adhering to their pre-determined reading progressions. This drill isolates these crucial elements, allowing quarterbacks to hone their footwork, decision-making, and throwing mechanics within the context of reading defensive coverages.

Purpose

  • Footwork Refinement: This drill allows quarterbacks to refine their dropback footwork, ensuring smooth transitions between their initial set, drop steps, and set point for each throw within their progression.
  • Reading Progression Practice: By incorporating coach-called reads, quarterbacks practice working through their progressions efficiently, identifying their primary and secondary targets based on the defensive alignment.
  • Decision-Making Development: This drill places an emphasis on decision-making. Quarterbacks learn to read the defense quickly and adjust their target based on coverage, mimicking real-game situations.
  • Mechanics Reinforcement: While prioritizing footwork and reading progressions, this drill allows quarterbacks to maintain proper throwing mechanics throughout the dropback and simulated throws.

Description

Drill Setup

  • Target Placement: Position coaches, cones, or bags at various locations on the field, simulating potential receiving targets for a specific play call. These targets should represent the different options within the quarterback’s reading progression.
  • Quarterback Lineup: The quarterback lines up in the shotgun formation or under center depending on the play call being practiced.

Drill Execution

  • Snap Simulation: The quarterback simulates the snap by taking a quick backpedal or using a hand signal.
  • Dropback Execution: They then perform their dropback according to the designated play call, mimicking the required number of steps and depth.
  • Reading Progression Cues: A coach yells out a number corresponding to a specific target within the quarterback’s reading progression.
  • Footwork Adjustment and Simulated Throw: Upon hearing the called number, the quarterback quickly adjusts their footwork to face the designated target. They plant their feet, establish a throwing platform, and simulate a throw to that target while maintaining proper throwing mechanics.
  • Progression Repetition: Repeat steps 3 and 4, with the coach calling out different reads throughout the quarterback’s entire progression.
  • Rotation: After each quarterback completes their progressions for a play call, they rotate out and allow the next quarterback to participate.

Progression

  • Progression Difficulty: Start with simple progressions for beginner quarterbacks and gradually increase the complexity as their footwork and decision-making skills improve. You can introduce additional targets or reading variations to challenge more advanced players.

Variation

Once your quarterbacks have grasped the basic mechanics of the “QB Read Progression Drill,” you can introduce a variation to increase repetitions and create a more dynamic environment. This variation allows multiple quarterbacks to participate simultaneously, maximizing their practice time.

  • Line up your quarterbacks next to each other, with at “safe” distance between them
  • On snap count by one QB all Quarterbacks perform the same drop and read progression
  • rotate the snap count calling duty, so that every quarterback gets to call the snap count

Coaching Points

  • Footwork Efficiency: Emphasize quick and efficient footwork transitions. Quarterbacks should avoid lunging or taking large steps, focusing on small, controlled movements to get their hips and feet aligned with each target.
  • Proper Throwing Position: Remind quarterbacks to maintain a two-handed grip on the ball until they initiate the throwing motion for the simulated throw. This reinforces proper ball security and control throughout the dropback.
  • Initial Set Angle: Discuss the importance of the initial “set” angle for the dropback. Quarterbacks should position their feet at an angle that allows them to comfortably pivot and throw to any target within their progression.
  • Pocket Awareness: Ensure quarterbacks maintain a sense of pocket awareness throughout the drill. They should feel comfortable and balanced within the pocket, ready to step up or escape pressure if necessary.
  • Weight Distribution: Advise quarterbacks to keep their weight mostly on their back foot during the dropback. This allows for quicker and more powerful stepping towards the target with their front foot when simulating the throw.
  • Progression Communication (Optional): For more advanced players, encourage quarterbacks to verbally call out their reads as they go through their progression. This strengthens the connection between reading the defense and making decisions, translating to quicker throws in real games.
