Superbowl XLII - When Desire beats Talent

Posted on February 10th, 2008 in NFL by coachroth

No doubt, the Patriots were the most talented team this season, but after they accomplished the perfect regular season, they somehow lost their poise… their performance in the playoffs vs Jacksonville and a heavily injury stricken Chargers team was everything but convincing and so they were in my eyes not that a high favourite for the Super Bowl, as they’ve been in the media.

Everybody was just talking about when they win the Super Bowl instead of if they win the Super Bowl. Even Don Shula and Mercury Morris were talking as if it was just a question of time until they will be joined by the Patriots having a perfect season.
But the Giants were hot, as they’ve been already in Dallas and in Green Bay: their Defense made both Offenses (Cowboys and Packers) look out of sync, not really focused… and so also the Patriots looked like…

The Patriots looked outcoached - not only with the X’s and O’s - but also motivation wise - Brady i.e. looked more offended than challenged that the Giants defense didn’t let them put their usual offense to work.

Very exciting Super Bowl, and the Patriots found out why you play each game and not take anything for granted. I believe everyone was rooting for the Giants and their momentum and incredible defense was the difference. I agree with you in your assessment of Tom Brady, he looked like he was ready for the post-game interviews and all the glamour photos to follow. I have never been a Eli Manning fan, but he sure sold me at the Super Bowl! Tom Brady should rewind his first Super Bowl tape to see the passion that he had back then, and also the excitement he showed when he won. This time around, he looked to cocky, and it was Eli doing all the smiling and leaving his play on the field!
