Dropped out: Aaron Rodgers (last week 7)
Why are the scores so much less than last weeks scores? Two underpreformers (Jon Kitna and Matt Hasselbeck) did not qualify on the NFL Passers statistics anymore, thus raising the average of all categories, making it harder to score ranking points. Remember, the scoring points are calculated on the average, the min and the max of all qualifying passers.
Notes upon the performance of the top 10 plus dropouts:
Drew Brees: In New Orleans Loss to the Falcons Drew Brees absolutely underperformed compared to his performance so far (except passing yardage and rushing): he only completed 53.4 percent of his passes, threw 3 interceptions.
Philip Rivers: remained on #2 despite his excellent performance 75% completion rate, 2 TD, 8.8 yards per pass and two touchdowns, but also threw 2 interceptions got sacked twice and rushed for negative yardage (-1).
Kurt Warner: Improved 2 ranks passing still inactive Tony Romo with a second superb performance (Passerrating 121.x second week in a row – even though the passerrating is not a ranking category it just combines a few categories into one number), but with a completion rate of 76.2% and 3 TD, no interceptions, sacks or fumbles he definitively belongs to the top performers of week 10.
Tony Romo: inactive – changes of ranking scores simply due to above explained effects.
Jay Cutler: his Week 10 performance was already computed into Week 9′s ranking, therefore only changes of ranking scores simply due to above explained effects.
Chad Pennington: took a deep drop from #3 to #6: meager 209 yards passing with an average of 5.8 per attempt an interception and 2 sacks weren’t the performance which could keep him near the top of the list.
Donovan McNabb: moved up one spot due to the dropping of Rodgers. In the Eagles loss he had a poor start (0 for 6) and could not make up for it over the remainder of the game: his 3 TD passes, 3 rushes for 35 yards and avoidance of sacks could not more than compensate the 47.2 completion rate, the way below average 194 yards passing and his interception.
Matt Ryan: jumped from (unranked (#11) to #8: improved in almost all categories: completing almost 70% (69.6) of his passes for 248 yards, took good care of the football without interceptions, fumbles or even sacks.
Jeff Garcia: inactive this week, could keep his #9 spot – changes of ranking scores see above.
Peyton Manning : despite the win and taking pretty good care of the ball (no interceptions, no fumbles) but with 2 sacks, completing just about half of his passes (52.5%) and his only average 240 passing yards didn’t support his rise in the TD category (3)…
Dropout Aaron Rodgers: could again not back his early season performance, and dropped out of the top ten list: his 57.7 percent completion rate and a poor 142 yards total passing, no TD but 4 sacks with a fumble (even though not lost) and his (for him below average) 1 yard rushing simply weren’t enough to keep him in the top ten rankings.
Oh, since I got comments (not on this blog) about that Eli Manning would belong on the list, here his overall standings compared to the other QBs in the qualifying list:
completion percentage: 60.5 – average: 61.9
yrds/attempt: 6.9 – average: 7.2
yrds/game: 214.0 – average: 223.6
TD/game: 1.6 – average: 1.2
int/game: 0.7 – average: 0.8
BigGame score: 3.0 – average: 5.1
sacks/game: 1.2 – average: 1.9
yrds/rush: 0.8 – average: 3.1 (only 1/4 weight)
fumbles/game: 1.0 – average: 1.3
winning: 0.89 – average: 0.5 (only 1/3 weight)
All that lead to a combined score of 4550 and rank #14.
Looking forward to your comments…
Update: (due to a typo, Matt Ryan got ranked too high, corrected!)
