With total disbelieve I receive a couple of hours ago a mail from spreadshirt: They pulled my Walter Payton design off my Football T-Shirt Shop because of copyright issues.
So I wrote them back that I truely created the design myself and thought that would clear the issue. But quite contraire: They wrote me back that
a) you cannot use a design (even a self created one) that’s showing another person without permission and
b) that the Walter Payton Foundation contacted them to pull the design.
(read the original quote on my myspace-blog)
First of all I think I at least they should have contacted me (maybe just a simple cc of the email to spreadshirt) and informed me that they’d object. And second I was going to give a substantial part of my revenue as a donation to that very Foundation.
Well it seems they don’t want any help…
That is not pleasant indeed. I hate it when profit gets in the way of these actions, I just doesn’t make any sense. I guess that you might get a better idea in the future, right? Have you tried explaining the entire situation? I don’t think that this would work, but maybe you have a chance, who knows? Good luck.

Well, I contacted them and they were really nice, but they couldn’t act any different since they sold the exclusive rights of the name to a big apparel company, and therefore couldn’t grant me the rights even if they wanted to. Well, here’s a link to “certified” Walter Payton Jerseys and Apparel – they’re almost as nice as mine was
