The last Weekend of the 2008 NFL regular season showed again some great Quarterback performances, but also had some sorry letdowns…
Drew Brees even though losing again and going just 8-8 with his Sains just missed the Dan Marino all time best of passing yards in a season by mere 15 yards. Yet he’s only the 2nd Quarterback to pass for more that 5000 yards in a season. Another great performance by Philip Rivers who led his Chargers to a more than convincing win over the Broncos and thus making the playoffs – an acomplishment sheer impossible just 4 weeks ago – and on the other end two very dissapointing performances by Tony Romo (in the Cowboys 6-44 loss to the Eagles) and Brett Favre (in the Jets 17-24 loss to the Dolphins).
| Rank | Quarterback | Score | last week | comments |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Drew Brees | 6767 | (1 – 6767) | Another great performace by Drew Brees bringing his team back from 10-30 at the beginning of the 4th Quarter, only bad you can say was they scored the go ahead TD a bit to soon, so the Panthers had the chance for a last Drive, which they consequently used to score the winning FG with no time left on the clock. Drew Brees threw for 386 yards 15 yards short of tying Dan Marinos record of 5068 yards passing in a single season. |
| 2 | Philip Rivers | 6492 | (2 – 6558) | Maybe “just” finishing 2nd among the Top 10 NFL Quarterbacks, but to me he deserves at least serious MVP considerations. Funny though, both teams of the #1 QB and the #2 QB finish their season at 8-8. With just one big difference: Brees’ Saints finish last in the strongest Division in the NFL and Rivers’ Chargers finish first in the weakest Division even hosting a playoff game. |
| 3 | Chad Pennington | 6367 | (3- 6533) | Oh, how sweet the revenge… Can it get any sweeter than that: Going into the home of your former team which disposed you for an elderly gunslinger and by beating them with a very good performance (113.2 passer rating, and a 97.4 passer rating for the whole season) and eliminating them from the playoffs for good while capturing the AFC East title and the #3 seeded spot for the the playoffs. |
| 4 | Peyton Manning | 6350 | (4 – 6117) | Winning the last 9 games (longest current winning streak) and performing great just shows how bumpy he started into the season. And yet he and his Colts might go all the way. |
| 6 | Kurt Warner | 5867 | (5 – 5867) | Despite winning the slide continued. The last two/three games cost him 4 spots in the ranking. The win over the Seahawks at least brought the winning feeling back to Arizona. That win also prevented the Cardinals to have to welcome the Eagles to whom the Cardinals lost 20-48 in the regular season, which would not have been very promising, especially with the current high the Eagles are soaring. Instead the Falcons are coming to town. |
| 9 | Jeff Garcia | 5417 | (11 – 5317) | Despite a fourth loss in a row and thus missing the playoffs move up into the Top 10 NFL Quarterbacks, mostly because of the poor Romo performance, which let Romo drop out of the Top 10. |
| 8 | Matt Ryan | 5442 | (7 – 5633) | Winning was enough to make the playoffs, it wasn’t enough to remain on #7 of the Top 10. |
| 7 | Matt Schaub | 5767 | (8 – 5567) | Playing the spoilers perfectly by beating the Bears and erasing all Chicago playoff hopes, Matt Schaub’s performance allowed him to improve to #7 of the Top 10 NFL Quarterbacks. |
| 5 | Aaron Rodgers | 5950 | (9 – 5550) | Finally a good performance of Rodgers (well, vs the winless Lions) which could not only stop his slide but could move up 4 spot to #5. |
| 9 | Jay Cutler | 5417 | (10 – 5417) | Remained among the top 10 despite losing big to the Chargers completing a 3 game losing streak which cost the Broncos an almost sure playoff spot… |
