NFL Schedule 2009 – Prime Time National TV Appearances – Winners and Losers

Add

On Tuesday (April 14th, 2009) the NFL published the 2009 Schedule.

So, just like last year, I’ll have a look into the distribution among the NFL-Teams of the prime-time games on the National TV Schedule.

This year the surprises are not so big as they were last year:

The Winners: 5 Teams with 5 appearances in the 41 Prime Time NFL Games in 2009:
Indianapolis Colts just 1 of their 5 Games on National TV, while the Chicago Bears, Dallas Cowboys, New York Giants and the reigning Super Bowl Champion Pittsburgh Steelers each host 2 of their 5 Prime Time Games.

The Losers: 6 Teams won’t show on Prime Time National TV in 2009, of which 5 are no (big) surprises, are they the low-performers of 2008: Cincinnati Bengals, Detroit Lions, Kansas City Chiefs, Seattle Seahawks, St. Louis Rams, only that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers won’t show on prime time in 2009 is a surprise (at least for me), since they just dissappointed in finishing the 2008 season after a very promising start…

Another surprise is that the traditional Thanksgiving Games in Dallas (vs the Raiders on CBS) and Detroit (vs the Packers on FOX) won’t be televised under one of the Big Prime Time Flags.

Since more than 1/4 of the so far scheduled Prime Time games (the week 17 Sunday Night Game is still to be announced) are Divisional Rivalry Games (11 out of 41) it was interesting to see which Divisions were favored und that point of view: AFC West, NFC South and NFC West went empty – none of their Divisional Games made it to prime time. The clear winner here is the NFC East with 4 Divisional Games, followed by the remainding 3 AFC Divisions East, North and South with each 2 Divisional Games and the NFC North with just 1.

The NFC East has an astounding total of 17 appearances on National TV in 13 games, followed by the AFC East with 12 appearances in 10 Games, NFC North (11/10), AFC South (11/9), AFC North (10/8), AFC West and NFC South (each 8/8) and the NFC West (5/5)

Here’s the complete list:
