Denver Broncos: Mike Shanahan got fired after missing the playoffs a third year in a row. Especially after leading the division with a comfortable 3 game lead and just 3 games to go. But somehow the Broncos managed to lose all three, while the Chargers won all three. Including a showdown matchup between the two in week 17: The Chargers won 52-21!
Elsewhere on the NFL Coaching Carousel:
Cleveland Browns: After Firing Romeo Crennel on Monday the Cleveland Browns scheduled an interview with also on monday fired former Jets Head Coach Eric Mangini. Reportedly they are also interested in interviewing Steve Spagnuolo.
Detroit Lions: The Lions are setting up interviews with a row of prominent coordinators including also Steve Spagnuolo, to replace Rod Marinelli.
New York Jets: Also the Jets have scheduled an interview with Steve Spagnuolo for Saturday. With so much interest in Spagnoulo it will be very hard – if not impossible – for the Giants to keep Spagnoulo for another season.
San Francisco 49ers: The 49ers decided to make Mike Singletary their permanent Head Coach. However they also decided to let Mike Martz go after just one year. It is reported that Singletary and Martz have too different philosophies about offensive concepts, to make a cooperation work.
St. Louis Rams: Scott Linehan was replaced by Jim Haslett after a 0-4 start into the season. Jim Haslett started promising with 2 wins but then lost the final 10 games of the season, too. Despite being the favorite of the players (they even signed a petition to keep Haslett) it is reported that Ravens DC Rex Ryan is the favorite of the management.
Buffalo Bills: Dick Jauron will also coach the Bills in 2009 announced owner Ralph Wilson, much to the delight of the Bill players, despite a season of unfulfilled expectations. After starting 4-0 into the season, finishing it 7-9 with 4 losses in the last 5 games – just winning in week 16 in Denver to spoil their season, too.
