The new NFL facemask ruling is a bad idea.
Why?
Well it doesn’t teaches the players to let go of the facemask anymore. Their thinking and reflexes are changing from “oops, got the facemask, better let go quickly to avoid the 15″ to “oops, got the facemask, better if it a good jerk, so it’s worth the 15″. There is no reward anymore for not jerking or holding on to the facemask.
This will lead in my honest opinion over time to more neck injuries! Often not immediately and therefore not clearly related to the new facemask rule. If they think that a 5 yard penalty isn’t enough for an unintentional facemask, they still had to opportunity to make it a 10 yard penalty, thus still making a differece between an unintentional (not injury prone) facemask, and one where the player holds on to the facemask or even jerks on it…
What do you think?
