Atlanta Falcons Coaching Staff almost complete

Posted on February 5th, 2008 in NFL by coachroth

After 2 weeks of absense I’ll try to catch up on what all happend on the NFL coaching carousel, since quite a lot happend, I’ll do it team by team…

Today: The Atlanta Falcons

Mike Smith, former DC of the Jacksonville Jaguars, has been named the new HC of the Atlanta Falcons.
And he subsequently named the Falcons interims HC for the remainder of the 2007 season, Emmitt Thomas, Assistant Head Coach.
Bill Musgrave will remain the QB coach, and Brian VanGorder, who already left the Falcons to become the DC at the University of South Carolina, returns to take on the role as the Falcons DC.
Mike Mularkey will Coordinate the Atlanta Falcons Offense, he’s been the OC of the 2006 Miami Dolphins and coached the Dolphins TEs in 2007.
Terry Robiskie is the new Receivers Coach of the Atlanta Falcons, and comes like Mularkey from the Miami Dolphins, where he also coached the WRs.
Ray Hamilton will coach the DL, Gerald Brown the RBs and Glenn Thomas take on the duty of Offensive Quality Control.
Hamilton follows his former DC, Mike Smith, from Jackonsville to Atlanta, while Brown comes from the Indiana University where he’s been the RB coach for six season, but he’s not the only one in his family taking on a new NFL coaching responsibility: His brother Kippy Brown just took on the OC job at the Detroit Lions, replacing Mike Martz.
Thomas also comes from the college ranks: He’s been the OC of the Midwestern State University Mustangs (Texas, NCAA Div II) for the last 4 years after serving 3 years as the WR coach, but also has already 4 years of NFL experience as an intern with the Baltimore Ravens (2001-2005)
Tom McMahon remains with the Atlanta Falcons, as an assistant special teams coach, while Keith Armstrong becomes the Falcons new Special Teams Coordinator, he also comes from the former Miami Dolphins Staff, just like Mularkey and Robiskie.
From the Oakland Raiders comes Jeff Fish, the Falcons new Strength and Conditioning Coach, a task he’s already had in Oakland for the last 4 years, prior to that he’s been the Head Strength and Conditioning Coach at the University of Missouri overseeing a program with almost 500 student athletes.
Fish is accompanied by Bill Hughan his former (as well as for the Raiders as also already at the University of Missouri) and future assistant Strenght and Conditioning Coach. (My Comment: It’s seem you just get them as a package :-) )
With Chris Scelfo as their new TE coach the Atlanta Falcons hire a former College HC (Tulane Green Wave 1998-2006). Scelfo sat out the 2007 season…
And with Paul Dunn (assistant OL) they hire another college coach (2005-2007 Pittsburgh Panthers), while the new Offensive Line Coach Paul Boudreau comes from the St. Louis Rams with 21 years of NFL experience, all of them as offensive line coach. Where ever Boudreau coached his offensive line always was among the best in not allowing sacks…
Joe Danna the Falcons new Defensive Quality Control Coach also comes from the college ranks: DB Coach for the James Madison Dukes (2007), in 2006 he coached the DBs at Georgia Southern after 4 years as an assistant at Central Michigan, his Alma Mater where he played WR from 1995 - 1998.

Current Falcons coaching staff to date:
Mike Smith (Head Coach),
Emmitt Thomas (Assistant Head Coach),
Mike Mularkey (Offensive Coordinator),
Brian VanGorder (Defensive Coordinator),
Keith Armstrong (Special Teams Coordinator),
Gerald Brown (Running Backs Coach),
Paul Dunn (Assistant Offensive Line Coach),
Jeff Fish (Strength and Conditioning Coach),
Ray Hamilton (Defensive Line Coach),
Bill Hughan (Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach),
Tom McMahon (Assistant Special Teams Coach),
Bill Musgrave (Quarterbacks Coach),
Terry Robiskie (Wide Receivers Coach),
Chris Scelfo (Tight Ends Coach),
Glenn Thomas (Offensive Quality Control Coach).
Paul Boudreau (Offensive Line),
Joe Danna (Defensive Quality Control Coach)

IMHO still open: Linebackers Coach, Defensive Backs Coach? maybe Emmitt Thomas will keep these responsibilities
